Zagato marks the end of an era with custom Ferrari 550 GTZ Barchetta

The very existence of this car is special.  It shows that the great days of superb and beautiful Italian cars are not quite dead.  There was a time when marques like Ferrari produced the running chassis and the great coachbuilders clothed the chassis in gorgeous (and sometimes ghastly!) coachwork that reflected the carrozzeria's signature style and the client's taste. Great houses like Zagato, Frua, Bertone, Vignale, Ital Design and Pininfarina, to name but a few, vied with each other to court their wealthy clients.
Sadly those days are mostly gone.  Many of the carrozzerias have been swallowed up by the major car manufacturers who use the name merely as a badge for their more "up market" offerings.  So nowadays if you want a Ferrari you (mostly) get one that looks like everyone else's.  Some may have more spoilers or carbon fibre this and that but they still are clearly merely minor variations on a theme.  In truth they are expensive variations of the boy racers' Subarus. But this one is the real thing.  A gorgeous body underpinned by pur sang running gear.
Let us wonder at and celebrate such creations.  We may never see their like again.

When Ferrari took the wraps off the 550 Maranello in 1996, it represented an important step in the company's evolution. Replacing the aging F512M (nee Testarossa), the 550 Maranello marked a shift back to front-engine V12 GTs for Ferrari - the niche market for which the company became known. But if the 550 Maranello was a pivotal product for Ferrari, the 550 Barachetta Pininfarina was even more desirable.

Characterized by its open-top format with rear cowling and leather-trimmed roll hoops, Ferrari only made 448 examples of the open-top 550 before the model line was replaced by the 575M. Another 559 drop-top Superamericas were built on the 575M's basis, but the rarest example was the solitary 575 GTZ built by Zagato for one Yoshiyuki Hayashi, an avid Ferrari collector in Japan.

For better or worse, the window of opportunity that, for a time, allowed coachbuilders like Zagato to create specials like the 575 GTZ is now closing, with Ferrari's own customization program bringing the carrozzeria tradition back to the Maranello gates - to the exclusion of others. But not before the Milanese design house gets in one last hoorah, celebrating the 90th anniversary of the first such collaboration between the two Italian houses of rolling style.



Taking five pristine examples of the aforementioned 550 Barachetta as their basis, the 550 GTZ borrows the shape from Hayashi's 575-based coupe and gives it a roadster body style. There's no word on whether any modifications have been carried out on the coupe's mechanicals, but the rolling stock appears to have carried over unchanged if that's any indication. All five examples have reportedly been spoken for at a price of £1 million ($1.6 million) apiece, which may seem like a lot for a car long since replaced, twice, but hardly too much to ask for historic artifacts of automotive Italiana.

Review: 1970 Hotchkis E-Max Dodge Challenger causes smiles lasting longer than four hours

From Autoblog.  Thank goodness that in this world of political correctness, where dissent is not tolerated and spin rules, someone has created a real car for real men.  This reminds me of the Holden small-block-Chevy-engined Monaro 327 GTS of my youth in Oz where each year it fought it out with Ford to see who preached the Sermon on the Mount (aka Bathurst).  They were even yellow too.
Side note for the Top Gear crew: Bathurst is pronounced "a" as in Ack Ack not "ar" as in arse.  Extraordinary that neither Jezza nor the Hamster seem to know this - perhaps they've never been to the World's Greatest Saloon Car Race.

Before we begin, we have to state up front that we've rarely - if ever - had more fun with a car than we had with the Hotchkis E-Max Challenger. And the loud yellow Dodge was in our possession for maybe five hours. Why are we cutting to the chase like this? Why not structure this review like any other and start with the basics, describe the vehicle and then state a conclusion? First of all, just look at the bloody thing: 'dripping with sex' is the only proper description. But the truth is that this is more the recounting of an adventure than a plain old car review. Keep reading. You're going to have some fun. Though not nearly as much fun as we did.



This is the type of experience that as a journalist you undeniably have to go through.

But yes, we should start with the basics. Legendary suspension tuner Hotchkis took a 1970 Dodge Charger with a 340 six-pack and built themselves an autocrosser. The list of modifications is not only the stuff of which jealousy is made, but exhaustive. Though, Hotchkis claims the E-Max isn't so wild, 'Even in Auto-Cross trim, E-Max is a relatively stock vehicle compared to many of the auto-cross competitors.' Good to know. That said, it's still a long list.



Here's some of it: Custom Moroso oil pan, Be Cool aluminum radiator, Red Line synthetic oil, Optima Battery, MSD ignition, Classic 5-Speed Tremec TKO, Flowmaster exhaust, Stoptech brakes, Forgeline wheels and Yokohama tires, Sparco Milano 2 seat (as in just the driver seat), Hurst Shifter. Not bad, right? Then you got all the Hotchkis stuff that lies beneath, including tubular A-arms, front and rear sport sway bars, subframe connectors, sport springs, adjustable steering rods with a fancy Flaming River power steering unit and adjustable strut rods. Says Hotchkis of their handiwork, 'The bolt-on system creates a proper negative camber curve, sufficient positive camber for high speed stability and full bump and droop travel without bumpsteer. Prototype Hotchkis-Afco adjustable stocks provide high performance damping.' Got it? Good - let's get to the story.

After an eight-year buildup, the Veritas RS III has finally slithered into series production in Grafschaft-Gelsdorf, Germany. Just like the Dutch firm Spyker, Vermot AG has resurrected the post-war German racing marque that sold a few road-going versions of their racers to a handful of lucky enthusiasts. Now, the new company is doing less racing and more street scorching, and the RS III is its first foray into the world of production cars.

In Monterey this past August, we caught our first glimpse of the finally-ready-for-production Veritas RS III. With its newly revised front end (now with 50 percent more serpent!) it looks even more like a BMW Z8 on acid. Which is totally appropriate, because this retro rocketsled is powered by the same 5.0-liter V10 engine found in the M5 supersedan. With 500 hp propelling a scant 2,400 pounds, the 30 insane lucky folks who plunk down a million bucks for one of these can look forward to a 0-100km/h dash of just 3.2 seconds and a top speed of more than 215 MPH.



That's Enzo-like performance for an Enzo-like price, but it offers ten times the exclusivity -- not to mention Veritas started operating the same year as Enzo Ferrari in 1947. The difference is that this serpent lay dormant for almost 50 years, getting ready to strike. Back from Italy

Back now from Italy.  Had a great time in the land that invented modern Europe and is the source of all beauty in the West.  Good bits are the architecture, art, cities, trains, food, coffee and plumbing.  Bad bits are the autostradi, drivers, signposting, steep hills and parking in towns.

BMW gets back into the leaning trike thing with SIMPLE concept [w/VIDEO]

John McEnroe had it spot on when he said "You CANNOT be serious".  This would have to be THE ugliest most ridiculous thing the elves from the Black Forest have ever made.  Would you want be seen in something that looks like this?  Back to the drawing boards BMW - just as well it's not going into production.

BMW has been rumored as of late to be pursuing everything from a so-called '0 Series' range of cars to a revival of its Isetta microcar brand, but the Bavarian automaker remains essentially mum on plans to diversify into the microcar market. Stoking the fires, however, is the new Simple concept, a leaning trike that is geared toward the 'professional commuter' - that is, an urban dweller who travels alone.

From the start, the SIMPLE (which stands for: 'Sustainable and Innovative Mobility Product for Low Energy consumption') was designed to minimize resources both in use and in production. The leaning concept is tall as a 5 Series, yet shorter than a Mini Cooper, and it offers seating space similar to that of a 3 Series coupe.

That tidy footprint and a slick drag coefficient of just 0.18 means that the Simple figures to be around 450 kilograms (under 1,000 pounds), so it only needs a small internal-combustion engine and an electric motor to power it. BMW says the Simple is capable of hitting 100 km/h - 62 mph - in under ten seconds and it tops out at over 200 km/h (124 mph), yet it needs a miserly 2 liters of gas over 100 km (62 miles), or around 118 mpg.



This isn't the first time BMW has investigated thrifty trikes - it actually began working on its CLEVER ('Compact Low Emission Vehicle for Urban Transport') concept back in 2002 in conjunction with the Berlin's Technical University, a project that took the form of a compressed natural gas trike with a CVT.



While there are no plans for production of either the SIMPLE or the CLEVER, BMW's expertise in motorcycles and its increasingly prominent Efficient Dynamics initiative doesn't have us ruling out a similar vehicle sometime down the road. In the meantime, you'll have to make the pilgrimage to the BMW Museum to check out BMW's SIMPLE and CLEVER contraptions. A Week in Tuscany: Chasing Beauty

Off for a week in Tuscany to get my yearly dose of high culture.  We are staying in a Fourteenth Century restored borgo, Borgo di Vagli, on the Tuscan - Umbrian border in the mountains behind Cortona.  It's within fairly easy distance of Florence (by train), Siena, Arrezzo, Orvieto, Perugia and Assisi.  What more could you want!  Will post more when I get back next week.

That didn't take long. Hot on the heels of the Toyota FT-86 Concept's reveal, we've got videographic proof that ToMoCo's new boxer-powered 2+2 is bound for the virtual circuits of Gran Turismo 5.



Make the jump to see a darkened shot of the C-4S flat-four underhood, followed by the FT-86 romping through some European backroads, running a street circuit and then sliding sideways at Tsukuba with its predecessor and inspiration, the original Toyota AE86 Corolla.
