There's been no lack of dubious claims for us to raise our eyebrows at over the years, whether it's about some fantastical car reaching the market on schedule and on budget, the veracity of a concept car's space-age powertrain, or reports of a blogger actually stepping outside and into the sunlight. But this one, like all glorious claims of the past - may their memory bring honor to their country for a thousand years to come - takes the proverbial cake.
In an ongoing and largely futile effort to show their recently and rapidly promoted supreme leader as the experienced governor and all-around superhuman mastermind the rest of the world doubts he is, the so-called Democratic People's Republic of Korea is painting one heck of a picture of Kim Jong Eun. According to North Korea, the scion of the late dictator Kim Jong Il was already driving a car at age 3. Impressive, but what's more is that he could apparently speed down a dirt road - rally-style - at speeds up to 75 mph by age 8.

The Motor City has been blessed with unseasonably warm weather and mostly clear skies this week, so consider it fortuitous that Porsche has gifted the Detroit Auto Show with the global premiere of its 911 Carrera Cabriolet.
This topless 911 carries with it a unique top mechanism that comes off like a particularly snug-fitting canvas lid that follows the roofline of the coupe beautifully - Porsche says it carries rigid panels like a folding hardtop along with its fabric top. The goal? Increased security and noise abatement along with improved styling. The new power retract cap can be raised or lowered at speeds up to 31 miles per hour and also includes a novel power wind deflector that can deploy in seconds.
The 3.4-liter Carrera reaches 62 miles per hour in 5.0 seconds with the seven-speed manual (4.8 seconds with the PDK and 4.6 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono) thanks to its 350-horsepower 3.4-liter flat six. Like the coupe, the Carrera S gets a displacement bump to 3.8 liters and a commensurate rise in power to 400 horsepower. 0-62 mph is dispatched in 4.7 seconds with the seven-speed manual and as little as 4.3 seconds with the PDK Sport Chrono. Hans Reiter, the chap you might know from Reiter Engineering and its winning Lamborghini racecars, started a company called Sareni United for one purpose: to build a Chevrolet Camaro GT3 race car. The resulting silver shockwave is powered by a 7.9-liter Katech V8 rated at up to 650 horsepower and 627 pound-feet, and the racer's lead engineer says it has lap times "similar to the Lamborghini Gallardo" but that there is still a lot of work to do.
More importantly, the plan wasn't to simply make a race-worthy Camaro, the brief was to make one one that was cost efficient enough to lure new entrants into the racing game. Planned overhauls for the engine and gearbox are at 5,000 kilometers and other parts at 10,000 km.
The Camaro GT3 has been homologated by the FIA, Reiter says two cars are already planned for use in Germany's ADAC GT Masters series and that other inquiries have been made about GT4 and touring cars. As I have blogged before Outback Australia is the original destroyer of reputations. A natural vehicle Terminator. The latest big name to go under is the Mercedes Benz G Wagon. As the film shows had it not been for the convoy mechanics and air support the team would have perished. So don’t try this on your own!
p.s The sole Mil Spec G wagon in the convoy behaved perfectly. The Australian Army have just ordered 2000 of them. Seems they know a thing or two.

Toyota have just released a version of the the legendary Land Cruiser just for Australia. The Big Country is harsh and unforgiving. Only the strongest survive. Range Rovers, Discoverys and Mercedes Benz G-Wagens wilt and die as the Outback pounds them into submission, breaking their suspensions and ruining their power trains. 90% of 4WDs in the Outback are Toyota Land Cruisers! And for good reason….they are just about the toughest thing this side of an Abrams MBT.
